Come join us to work in the tourist industry to provide the best experience for our guests at our new eatery in Lincoln. Our restaurant will open at the beginning of September, just after the beginning of the school year. It will specialise in freshly made dishes, be they vegetarian or regular – every taste preference is welcome. Our master chef has huge experience in creating the best flavours as they are brought out by genuine international cooking. Your job will be to assist her in the kitchen but also to accompany her to local farmers’ markets to pick high quality ingredients which are the basis of excellent dishes. To put it simply: It’s the quality of the ingredients that makes excellent dishes possible. You are expected to work from 7:30 to 11:30 in the morning and then from 5:00 all the way through to 9:00 p.m. Extra hours after these scheduled times will be paid as overtime with extra bonusses for working at the weekend or at special occasions when you work after 9:00 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Monday and Tuesday so you will be able to work 40 hours a week. During the summer months, when we have our busiest time of the year, it will not be possible to go on holiday. You are, however, more than welcome to take time off as soon as September has started. As our restaurant is located in a small village fifteen miles outside Lincoln, we can offer you free accommodation at our staff residence, with full board, WiFi and TV as well as three tennis courts. Professional clothing will be provided by our company and we expect you to wear these branded items during working hours. We support diversity and encourage applications from all sections of the community. The only things you need to have are first commitment to your job and second the professional skills that are required. Your annual salary will be in the range of 30,000 pounds, but as I said before you can earn extra bonus payments if we have to ask you to stay longer or to work at weekends. If you are interested in working with us, just drop us a line or contact us on Instagram as soon as you can. We are looking forward to hearing from you. 0: The company has just opened a new restaurant in Lincoln. 1: Freshly-made dishes are their speciality/on their menu. 2: Going to local famers’ markets is one of the duties of the assistant chef. 3: Doing overtime is sometimes required, but it is paid extra. 4: Going on holiday during the summer season is not allowed/is impossible. 5: The company offers free accommodation and free food. 6: For the company your personal background is unimportant, only your commitment/hard work counts/matters. 7: Send them an e-mail or get in touch through their social media if you want to take the job/ work for them/there. 9 Consumer society and the (global) economy Exploring vocabulary: The global economy (Key) a)–b) Individual answers Identifying redundant passages (Key) 1. 12, 2. 8, 3. 11, 4. 9, 5. 7, 6. 10 Test practice: Discussing internet trade (Transcript and key) Speaker 1: (fade in) … you know, what I’m really worried about is internet trade. Now, in theory, that means that the goods need to be taken back to the retailer, right? But we all know that internet retailers don’t bother to take unwanted goods back because it’s just too costly. They – they have them thrown away or destroyed which is, of course, a colossal waste of money and resources, but in the short term it’s cheaper for the retailers.
