It sounds odd but be patient with the adults in your family. Chris: (laughs) That sounds like a good piece of advice. But what should they do if nothing works? Carol: There are several things you can do. First, you can contact people like us. I mean you could, ah … well, we are here to help and give you support. We’re professionals and we will not share your private problems with outsiders or – or family. Second, you can contact your teachers at school or the social services in your area. They are experienced in dealing with teenagers and teachers usually know you a little better than outsiders do. Third and most importantly, don’t keep your problems to yourself. Talking about your issues is way better than not. Chris: Thank you, Carol. Test practice: Work from home – A solution for the future (Transcript and key) Erm … in recent years, work from home has become an important aspect of most people’s working routine. People have got used to this form of work and do not want to go back to their offices. That is why some company bosses have made a renewed call for people to return to the office, claiming working from home does not work and that when people tried to do so they were likely to become distracted. Now, the general view is that staff are more productive, more energetic, full of ideas when they are in the workplace surrounded by other people. And organising meetings in the office is much easier even though online meetings are now very common. For many, however, working from home means you can spend an awful lot of time doing all sorts of things instead of sitting at your laptop and doing what you are supposed to do, namely work. When people return to the office in larger numbers our city centres will come to life again. A lot of businesses that have been having a tough time will benefit from that, too. That is why the authorities are currently preparing a campaign to try to get over-50s to return to the workplace. One can’t help but be suspicious about the desire to work from home on Mondays and Fridays, some politicians claim. They say that office staff tend to work from home especially when sporting events are taking place or when the weather is nice. And above all, this is a welcome opportunity to extend the weekend by one day. However, it must be said that working from home means that your private life and your professional activities overlap and it needs a lot of discipline and experience to separate these two spheres. This aspect can have a negative effect in two ways: either people extend their free time and therefore their performance at work suffers and that’s not good for your professional career or it is the other way round. People work much longer hours than they are supposed to simply because they cannot put an end to their professional activities. Then, there is another aspect that needs to be considered, namely: Who pays the bills? You see, when people work from home, they need to cover the costs of electricity, heating and the internet and all the other expenses themselves, which saves companies a lot of money in the long run. On the other hand, eating at home instead of in a bar or a restaurant at lunchtime can save you a lot of money which you can spend otherwise, provided you are prepared to cook you own meals. And then there is the trip to work, which usually takes up some time during the rush hour. 1 2 3 4 + 29 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
