Test practice: The housing situation of students (Transcript and key) Graham: Our first guest speaker tonight on Freshers’ Evening is Paul Carring from the College Council. Welcome, Paul. Paul: Hello, good evening. My name’s Paul Carring, I’m the housing representative of the College Council and our focus today is student housing. Every student needs a place to stay, but the difficult question is how to go about it. Basically, there are two options for you. The first option is to apply for a place in a hall of residence on campus. This has the advantage that you have a common room where you can get your meals and there’s usually a small bar or cafeteria where you can meet and have a drink or two. Provided that you get a place there, it is comparatively cheap and you will be together with other students from the college. The person in charge is the warden, a member of staff of the college, usually a professor or a senior lecturer. They look after you and see to it that everybody feels comfortable. The rooms in these halls of residence are usually very small, just big enough for one person and nothing fancy, and you have to move out every summer as the rooms are used as tourist accommodation. That also means that you will most probably not get the same room after the summer holidays. The second option would be to share a small terraced house with two or three other students. Usually everyone has their own room and you would share the kitchen, the toilet and the bathroom. Again you would be together with other students but you would have to agree on house rules, which can be quite a challenge. In addition, such student houses are usually not in good shape, some are even quite run down and not always clean. That’s actually quite an issue. In a hall of residence there is cleaning personnel who make sure that the rooms are fairly clean and tidy. In shared accommodation you have to do all the cleaning etc. yourself. You also have to agree on how to pay the rent and, of course, who pays what. The bottom line is, it can be great fun and inspiring if it works. If it doesn’t, it can be hell and can prevent you from succeeding in your studies. Anyway, these are the two options which we can offer from the College Accommodation Service. Of course, you can also buy a house or a flat or move in with friends or your family, but these options are outside of what we can offer. If you’re interested in a place at a hall of residence or if you need help to find a place for shared housing, just come to our information desk and we will try to help you. Thanks, Graham, over to you now. Graham: Thanks, Paul, for your explanations. By the way, there will be the opportunity to ask questions after the three presentations tonight.
