16 82 The individual and society The American Dream The concept of the American Dream probably has a different meaning to every US citizen. For some it is the dream of freedom and equality, for others it is the dream of a fulfilled life or even of fame and wealth. In general, the American dream can be defined as being the opportunity for and the freedom of all citizens to achieve their goals and become rich and successful if only they work hard enough. It focuses more on the success of the individual and not primarily on the well-being of the whole population. a) Below are a number of words that can be associated with the American Dream. Group them into three categories.
