7 85 Passive voice Past participles: A burglary Insert the past participle forms of the verbs in brackets. The only thing we know so far is that the door had been forced 1 (force) open before the burglars entered the house. Once inside the living room was 2 (devastate). The furniture was 3 (throw) around, the curtains were 4 (rip) apart and the windows were 5 (smash). The whole house looked like a mess. Our forensic team was 6 (call) in to collect evidence. The samples were then 7 (send) to the forensic lab to find out more about the burglars. In the kitchen a wallet was also 8 (find), which might belong to one of the suspects. That is the reason why we are sure that the burglars will be 9 (catch) fairly soon. Pictures of possible suspects will be 10 (publish) in the next few days. The owners of the house were lucky because they were not at home when it happened. Otherwise they might have been 11 (hurt). As soon as we know more about the incident, the press will be 12 (inform) immediately. Passive voice: The basics The passive voice is often used when people want to focus on the action. Change the following sentences into the passive voice. 1. The thunderstorm destroyed the only bridge in the village. The only bridge in the village was destroyed by the thunderstorm. 2. The boys smashed the big bedroom window with a rock. 3. The strong earthquake damaged the church beyond repair. 4. At the wedding waiters in white dinner jackets will serve dinner. 5. The band played a song by Vampire Weekend at the beginning of their show.
