Viviane West, 30, doctor; spends her holiday time as a hospital ship volunteer Jay Vaughan, 28, film maker; makes documentary films on everyday heroes Erin O’Dea, 18, London schoolgirl; volunteers part-time at an animal shelter Tip In every English tense there is a simple and a progressive form. These forms do not simply show the time of an event; they also show how a speaker sees the event they are talking about. Situations that are perceived as completed or permanent are put in the simple form, situations that are seen as ongoing or temporary are expressed in the progressive form.
