S The London College of Fashion (LCF) exhibition “Black identity in fashion and culture” aims to highlight the influence of the Black community on the world of fashion. Through design and art pieces, which use a multi-sensory approach that includes sound, scent and visual, visitors should take in this experience. The walls of the venue are painted black in response to the common “white cube” interior, the white boxlike exhibition space associated with traditional galleries which often exclude Black artists. The exhibition invites people to question the conventional sterility of the “white cube” within which art is predominantly viewed today. This bold choice challenges stereotypes and fosters inclusivity. This event experiments with new aesthetics and undermines the historical model of how art is viewed today and highlights different aspects of Black culture and community. The aim of this event is to celebrate, educate and connect the LCF community to new cultural identities, past, present and future in the context of fashion. Through this interactive exhibition, visitors are invited to explore culture and identity from a creative standpoint, seen through the eyes of others. In turn, visitors should be influenced to bring about change and set examples for the future of the fashion industry. The works on display reflect the ways in which joy is expressed through art and aims to provide a platform for artists to move away from portraying Black experience as purely negative and traumatic.
