READInG 1 Ways technology in the classroom is changing education It is essential for educators to keep up with the latest technological developments. The key is using devices like laptops, smartphones, and tablets in the classroom. Today’s students have grown up with all this technology, so schools must change with the times and adapt to the way students learn best. Young people must be prepared for the real world and their future careers, where they will most likely be using mobile devices and have AI systems available to them. Here’s how technology in the classroom is changing education: (1) With devices like tablets, for example, students can learn everywhere. As soon as they have been given a task, students can work on it inside their classroom, in between classes, while travelling on the bus, at home, etc. Mobile classroom technology provides the accessibility to learn both inside and outside school. Hybrid textbooks, where hard copies and e-textbooks are available, are becoming the norm. E-books in general make sense; they are cheaper, more up-to-date, and more interactive. (2) With technology in the classroom students have become a lot more active and engaged. Rather than the teacher giving the students facts, which are then simply repeated back without thinking, the teacher has become more of a facilitator, teaching students how to learn and find information for themselves. (3) The role of AI in the classroom has raised some questions. There is no doubt that chatbots are a useful tool for study. However, there is a danger that students may be tempted to rely on chatbots to do their work for them, and not develop skills or understanding themselves. If students are taught to use a range of AI tools to support their learning, this is clearly a helpful technology. (4) Through adaptive learning technologies, educators can provide personalised learning experiences which fit each student’s progress and learning style. This provides opportunities for students to be able to work and excel at their own level and pace. Teachers may be alerted about students who are falling behind or struggling so they can help students in a timely manner.
