83 Can Hollywood strike back? Most people around the world are familiar with Hollywood films. They are an important medium for spreading American culture and the English language globally. By watching films in their original English version, people learn the language through this popular form of entertainment. Read the article about Hollywood below. The original three paragraphs of the text have been split in half and then mixed up. Put the halves back together and decide what order the paragraphs should go in. Discuss with a partner how you decided on the correct order. READING 12 Body paragraph 1 Body paragraph 2 Body paragraph 3 The (re)making of Hollywood A After that initial film, other producers realised that the climate in California was ideal for filming. The weather was good all year round and the sunlight was reliable. They could easily access a range of settings with the coast, forests and the desert all close by. Many filmmakers then moved from New York to California. B Hollywood has been hit by other challenges apart from declining cinema attendance. Strikes by writers and actors demanding better pay have affected production. Streaming services, for example, have meant less money for performers as they don’t get paid each time an episode of a show or a film they appear in is watched. Instead, they receive a fixed amount for making their show or film available on the platform. As a result, actors are unhappy that they earn far less for streaming work, even if they are starring in a hit show. C Hollywood! What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the name? You probably think of films, celebrities and glamour. Hollywood must be one of the best-known places on earth, but how did it become the home of the film industry? A part of Los Angeles, it used to be called ‘Hollywoodland’ until 1949. The first film in Hollywood was made in 1910. D Later in the 20th century, filmmaking progressed and thousands of films were produced in Hollywood. Many of them have become world-famous, such as Gone with the Wind, Avatar and the Star Wars series, to name just a few. Films can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to produce. For instance, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End cost an enormous $300 million! E More conflicts come from technological developments such as AI, which actors say could be used to replace them. For instance, there are fears actors could be scanned, and film companies would own these images and feed them into an AI tool to copy actors for future projects without paying them properly. Entertainment writers are also concerned that their work could be replaced by AI programs like chatbots. We can only hope that the film industry will find a way to balance the use of modern technology with fair treatment of actors and writers. F So filmmaking is clearly big business. The huge sums of money and Hollywood’s reputation have attracted the best directors, producers and actors. Of course, the way people watch films and TV shows made in Hollywood has changed over the years. Although cinemas still screen the latest ‘blockbusters’, easily accessible streaming platforms mean that people are more likely to wait until films are available to stream and watch them in the comfort of their own homes, resulting in fewer people going to the cinema.
