You probably used to enjoy such stories as a small child. Storytelling is an old tradition: hundreds of years ago people would tell these tales to each other. But they weren’t just for entertainment; they would often carry a message or a warning for people. The oral tradition of telling one another stories came long before the written page. Tales used to be told or performed, rather than written down, and would be handed down from generation to generation. You will know the main elements of traditional tales, with characters who are heroes and villains, and a typical setting like a castle, forest or village. You will recognise the protagonist, who represents good, and the antagonist, who represents evil, and you will be familiar with the plots of such stories, where there is always a dilemma to be resolved. Most traditional tales feature talking animals, magic, spells and curses, and they may have a familiar beginning such as “Once upon a time …” or an ending like “… and they all lived happily ever after.” Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
