40 Unit 03 | See it. Want it. Buy it. Study the Strategies box, then read the text about buying habits of US teenagers. Some words are missing. Complete the text by writing one word for each gap (1–11) in the spaces provided. The first one (0) has been done for you. LANGUAGE IN USE 11 a Strategies box Language in use – Open gap fill (OGF) Open gap tasks often test your knowledge of word collocation – words typically used together. What helps with this most is increasing your vocabulary through reading and studying. There are also some more practical things you can keep in mind when doing this kind of task: Every gap must be filled with exactly one word. Contractions like I’m count as one word. For many gaps, there is more than one possible answer. Write down only one! If you can’t think of a word right away, start by thinking about what kind of word (noun, verb, preposition, etc.) the sentence needs. Make sure you use the right form of the word. For example, a noun can be singular or plural, a verb might need a suffix like -s or -ed. What teenagers are buying According to a study, the average teenager in the USA spends over $2,300 each year. They spend (0) on fashion, food, digital media, personal care products, video games and entertainment. 14,500 US teens were surveyed about their spending habits, 54% male, 44% female and 2% non-binary, and the average (1) was 16.2 years. The amount teens spent dropped to its lowest level in 20 years during the pandemic, but it is increasing again from year to (2) . They spend most on clothing (20%), closely followed by food (19%). It is especially interesting that young people are thinking ahead, with 83% of them regularly saving money for the future. Statistics also show more and more US teens are taking a part-time (3) . Around 37% of them are working, mostly in sports and recreation jobs, but also many of them in food and beverage industries. There are clear (4) between what male and female teenagers buy. Girls spend 29% of their money on fashion, (5) boys spend only 16%. However, boys spend much more on video games (14%) (6) to girls (1%). Girls spend 11% of their money on personal care products, whereas boys spend 3%. These days, teenagers are more aware of (7) sustainably. They may purchase second-hand clothes (8) than buying ‘fast fashion’ and choose natural fibres that can be recycled more easily. Eating out is also becoming more sustainable, with nearly 50% of all teens either already eating plant-based meats (9) being willing to try them. Teens are also becoming more confident about saying (10) they want and complaining about products or services which are (11) satisfactory. They are more willing to return faulty goods and ask for a refund or a replacement. Go through the article again. What do these figures relate to? 16.2, 37, 16, 1, 3, 50.
