37 “What would you like?” Shopping phrases Look at the word clusters below. All the phrases have been taken from shopping conversations. The phrases on the left are things a shop assistant might use when talking to you, the phrases on the right are things you might say. Work with a partner and see how many ‘shopping sentences’ you can come up with. You can use all the phrases more than once. LANGUAGE + SPEAKING 2 a Work with your partner again. Decide who is the customer (who also decides what to buy) and who is the shop assistant. Then improvise a shopping dialogue. Use as many of the expressions above as possible in the conversation. Write down how many exchanges you can string together, then change roles. Choose one of your dialogues, role play it and record yourself on the phone. Then watch the recording with another pair and give each other feedback. Listen to three different conversations and take notes on the following questions: 1 What do the people (want to) buy? 2 What’s the problem? 3 Is there a solution to it? What could Lizzie do to get Hannah’s present on time? Brainstorm with a partner and share your solution with another pair. Reported speech When you report something that somebody else has said at a later time, the meaning should stay the same. To do this, you often need to change things like pronouns and words that describe when and where something happened so that they make sense in the new situation. Look at the examples below, match the direct speech to the reported speech and underline the changes. b c LISTENING 3a 06 b LANGUAGE 4 Statements 1 “The flash drives haven’t arrived yet.” 2 “I’ll get Lizzie’s present next week.” 3 “I need my kit tomorrow.” a Marc said he needed his kit the next day. b Lizzie complained that the flash drives hadn’t arrived yet. c Steve said he would get Lizzie’s present the following week.
