You want to say that a certain choice is the best one. By the way: Confusing foods Ordering food in a foreign country can be difficult sometimes. In fact, even for English native speakers it’s easy to get confused, especially when the same food has a different name in another English-speaking region. Here are some examples of potential pitfalls: Chips is British English, French fries is American. If you order chips in the US, you will get what most Brits would call crisps. They’re all basically pieces of potato fried in hot oil, but you wouldn’t want crisps with ketchup and mayonnaise for lunch, would you? Likewise, when you are craving something sweet, vocabulary can become rather confusing. Sweets are called candy in the US, whereas biscuit is the British word for a cookie. Also, a muffin isn’t necessarily something sweet in Britain, where this name is also given to a type of bread for breakfast eaten with eggs and bacon. The most contradictory food of them all is pie. In the US, this refers to dessert. In particular, apple pie, blueberry pie and pumpkin pie are beloved variations of this traditional American treat. When you are in the UK, however, you will mostly get steak and kidney pie with a thick salty gravy and mashed potatoes. You might also get a pork pie, which is made of cooked pork covered in pastry and eaten cold, sometimes as part of a ‘Ploughman’s Lunch’. So before you order your pie, make sure you know whether you are getting something sweet or savoury. Nothing is considered more typically British than tea. However, if you’re only thinking of a hot beverage made of boiling water and plant leaves, you haven’t fully understood the many meanings of the word. In the UK, depending on where in the country you go, tea can comprise anything from a scone or cakes and sandwiches in the mid-afternoon, to a full dinner in the evening.
