87 B2+ | 8. Klasse | Unit 07: For science! Marie’s final project paper story I have always been fascinated by bilingual families. In my own family, the (0) language we speak is German, so I have often wondered how things work when the parents speak different languages and how families include different cultures in their daily lives. This is why I (1) to investigate bilingual families for my final project paper. First, I did a lot of (2) . I read articles and blogs online, and my teacher (3) a few books that were also very helpful. I learned a lot about bilingual families. For example, did you know that 26% of schoolchildren in Austria – more than a quarter! – speak another language in addition to German in their families? In addition to researching the literature and summarising some key points for the theoretical part of my final project paper, I also wanted to do something practical. I decided to talk to people and find out what everyday (4) in a bilingual family is really like. I know a few bilingual families myself, and my teacher put me in (5) with some more. I sent out an online questionnaire about the way they use their languages to ten families, and fortunately, all of them (6) it in. It was hard work, but really interesting to look at the results. My questionnaire data showed that there are lots of different ways of using languages in a bilingual family. Sometimes the non-German speaking parent speaks their native language to the kids, but the kids answer in German. Read the text about Marie’s final project paper. Some words are missing.
