Choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) for each gap (1–15). Put a cross ( ) in the correct box. The first one (0) has been done for you. LANGUAGE IN USE 2 Pavel’s final project paper story I’ve always liked reading, and for the last year or two, I have preferred reading in English to reading in German. Currently, I’m obsessed with the Heartstopper graphic novels by Alice Oseman, which have recently been made into a TV series. My English teacher suggested that I should write my final project paper in English about these books, and he said that he would be happy to be my (0) . That sounded great, and I agreed immediately, but I didn’t know what exactly my topic should be. My teacher explained to me that in an academic (1) such as the final project paper, you start with a question, the so-called (2) question. This is a question about your topic that you are interested in and which you try to answer in your final project paper. Sometimes you can do that by studying the (3) on the subject – basically, reading a lot about your topic to find out how authors who are (4) on the subject have answered your question. You cannot simply write a (5) of what everyone has said, however – that’s not enough for a final project paper. You have to add your own (6) and thoughts and come to some sort of (7) at the end. Another interesting thing you can do is (8) your own data, for example, by asking people to (9) a questionnaire for you and evaluating their answers, or by doing (10) with people. If you do that, you’ll have to record what they say and maybe also (11) it. When you do that instead of just reading about your topic, this is (12) an empirical approach. My teacher told me that you can combine a theoretical part and a practical part in a final project paper, which sounded really interesting. He asked me if I could think of a question I wanted to answer, and I said I wanted to find out if the Heartstopper novels or the TV series are better. My teacher explained that this question was too broad and that I had to (13) it down. He helped me to do that, and in the end, my question was “Do young Austrian readers prefer the Heartstopper novels or the TV series, and why?” We decided that I would try to find some articles on this topic online and then do a survey of my classmates and the other year eight students in my school. I thought I was finally ready to start writing, but no, my teacher told me to put together a brief (14) first. This is like a table of contents for your final project paper in which you decide what structure, that is, what different sections and chapters it will have. Once he has approved it, we’ll come up with a (15) for the final project paper which reflects the main question and ideas so that the reader knows what to expect, and then I’ll finally be able to start working on it.
