WRITING 4 Yara’s first draft of her email to David Attenborough: After watching his speech at COP26, you have decided to write to David Attenborough. In your email, you should explain how you feel about climate change highlight a message in his speech that particularly touched you outline your plans for saving the planet Write around 250 words. Hello Mr Attenborough! I watched your speech at COP26 online – wow! It was really great! I wanted to tell you what I think. Everybody is worried about climate change. Me too! What I am most worried about is that so many animals are dying out because they don’t have anywhere to live anymore. Also, people hunt them although it’s forbidden because they can make a lot of money when they kill elephants and sell ivory, for example. It would be really sad if we lost the great variety of plants and animals that we have today. What I liked is that you talked about hope, not fear. I think it’s better if people are full of hope because that makes them want to do things. If you feel scared, you just give up. People will have to continue fighting climate change for a long time, so it’s important that they don’t lose hope. I liked it when you talked about how powerful people are. It really made me think about what I can do. I’m still in school, so for now, I can only do things like using stuff that can be recycled or not producing too much rubbish to begin with. After school, I’d like to work for an organisation that protects the environment. I’ve heard that there are organisations that set up protected areas where rare animals can live in safety. Thank you for everything you do for the environment – I hope this email shows you that young people are listening to you. All the best from Yara Study the comments by Yara’s teacher on the next page. Mark the problematic passages in her draft. Pay particular attention to the words her teacher suggests using in the email. Which phrases should they replace? Example: lucrative – they can make a lot of money a Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
