78 B2+ | 8. Klasse | Unit 05: Caring for our world Read David Attenborough’s speech to the delegates of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021. Some words are missing. Change the word in brackets to form the missing word for each gap (1–15). Write your answers in the spaces provided. The first one (0) has been done for you. LANGUAGE IN USE 3 Put to the test Your excellencies, delegates, ladies and gentlemen, it’s easy to forget that, ultimately, the emergency climate comes down to a single number, the concentration of carbon in our atmosphere, and it defines our (0) (relate) with our world. For much of the ancient history of (1) (human), that number bounced wildly between 180 and 300, and so too did global temperatures. It was a brutal and (2) (predict) world. But just over 10,000 years ago, that number suddenly stabilised and with it, Earth’s climate. We found ourselves in an unusually benign period with predictable seasons and (3) (rely) weather. For the first time (4) (civil) was possible and we wasted no time in taking advantage of that. Everything we’ve achieved in the last 10,000 years was enabled by the (5) (stable) during this time. The global temperature has not wavered over this period by more than plus or minus one degree Celsius, until now. Our burning of fossil fuels, our (6) (destroy) of nature, our approach to industry, are releasing carbon into the atmosphere at an unprecedented pace and scale. We are already in trouble, and this story is one of (7) (equal) as well. Today, those who’ve done the least to cause this problem, are being the hardest hit. Ultimately, all of us will feel the consequences, some of which are now (8) (avoid). Is this how our story is due to end? Perhaps the fact that the people most affected by climate change are no longer some imagined future generation, but young people alive today, will give us the impetus we need to rewrite our story. We are after all, the greatest problem (9) (solve) to have ever existed on Earth. We now understand this problem. We know how to stop the number rising and put it in reverse. A new (10) (industry) revolution, powered by millions of (11) (sustain) innovations, is essential, and is indeed already beginning. We will all share in the benefits. Affordable, clean energy, healthy air and enough food to sustain us all. We must use this opportunity to create a more equal world and our (12) (motivate) should not be fear, but hope. It comes down to this. The generations to come will look at this conference and consider one thing. Did that number stop rising and start to drop, as a result of all the (13) (commit) made here? There’s every reason to believe that the answer can be yes. Surely, working together, we are (14) (power) enough to save the planet. In my lifetime, I’ve witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful (15) (recover). That desperate hope, ladies and gentlemen, delegates, excellencies, is why the world is looking to you and why you are here. Thank you. 0 relationship 6 12 1 7 13 2 8 14 3 9 15 4 10 5 11 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
