Many people today know him as a (0) and activist for the environment, but only few know about his long and impressive career. David Attenborough was born in 1926 and grew up in Leicester, England. He developed a strong interest in natural history at an early age. After graduating from the University of Cambridge, he became a television (1) for the BBC. His first big success was the series Zoo Quest, which he produced with the reptile expert Jack Lester. This show was new and very (2) for its time, which was risky, but luckily for David Attenborough, it turned out to be (3) popular. In 1965, Attenborough became controller of the BBC’s new second television channel, BBC 2. He helped launch several ground-breaking (4) programmes on cultural topics as well as natural history, but he also aired the comedy series Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which was quite (5) at the time because of its crude humour that some people disapproved of. Attenborough was director of television programming of the BBC from 1968 to 1972, but he (6) and left the BBC because he wanted to write and produce television series on a freelance basis. He subsequently wrote (7) award-winning television programmes on natural history, most notably the Life series, for example Life on Earth (1979), The Life of Mammals (2002–03), and Life in Cold Blood (2008). He also narrated these programmes, and millions of people all around the world are familiar with his (8) voice and enthusiastic reaction to (9) with various wild creatures, some cuddly, but others quite dangerous and even potentially (10) ! His later TV programmes dealt heavily with environmental issues such as global warming, including State of the Planet (2000) and Are We Changing Planet Earth? (2006). In 2019, the BBC broadcast his documentary Climate Change – The Facts, in which he warned that the (12) to act now could lead to “the collapse of our societies.” David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020) was described as his “witness statement”.
