WRITING 5 A The view that COVID-19 has created a ‘lost generation’ is highly controversial. Some people explain that young people have lost many opportunities due to the pandemic, while others claim that today’s teenagers have built up resilience and learned important skills thanks to the challenges they had to face. Personally, I do not believe that my generation is ‘lost’. B How do you feel about all this talk about a ‘lost generation’ because of COVID? I think it’s rubbish, and many of my friends agree. OK, so our lives haven’t been easy throughout the pandemic, but we’re not a lost generation! Why do people keep saying that? C Self-organisation, critical thinking, healthy relationships … We’ve definitely learned a lot. Do you agree, or do you think we’re really a ‘lost generation’ like some people say? D To sum up, young people have become more independent thanks to the self-organisation skills they have acquired, they have developed critical thinking skills by dealing with all the information and misinformation they were exposed to, and they have learned to value both online and offline relationships. Therefore, they cannot be described as a ‘lost generation’. Writing tip It is important to use the correct register for a specific text type. Formal English is not ‘better’ than informal English, and informal is not the same thing as basic.
