You will pay particular attention to the logic of the text. Study the prompt below and read the essay on the next page. You will notice that some important elements are missing. Complete the essay following the instructions in tasks a and b. WRITING 3 The principal of your school is considering introducing a new elective subject called ‘Cultural Studies’. She would like to find out what the students in upper secondary think about this idea and has given them the opportunity to explain their thoughts in an essay. You have decided to hand in an essay in which you discuss (A) the importance (B) the dangers (C) different ways Write around 400 words. Give your essay a title. Find the correct topic sentence for each paragraph in the essay. 1 Travelling broadens the mind and expands your cultural horizons. 2 When people are not culturally sensitive, they risk offending others without meaning to. 3 Intercultural competence has always been extremely important for everyone. 4 Intercultural competence is more important than ever in today’s world. 5 People should learn to be tolerant of all the other cultures they encounter. 6 You do not even have to leave your own country to work on your cultural knowledge. 7 Reading books is a highly efficient way to develop cultural competence. 8 Everybody has become more culturally sensitive over the last few decades. These supporting details are missing from the essay. Where do these sentences go (one per paragraph A, B and C)? i I t is possible to discover a considerable amount of cultural information in books and on the internet, and this information can even be deeper and more meaningful than the habits and etiquette you can observe when you travel. Paragraph iii M odern means of transportation, such as cheap flights, have greatly facilitated visits to foreign countries. Paragraph a b Writing tip When you check your essay, make sure that all the supporting details are related to the main idea of your paragraph (topic sentence) and that each paragraph develops the idea of the corresponding bullet point.
