31 Unit 06 The choice is yours Expand your vocabulary: The suffix -ous Read this text written by a grandson about his memories of his grandfather, an actor. Fill in the gaps with a synonym of the word or phrase in brackets which ends in -ous. The first few letters of the word are given. A life on stage My grandfather was from a (1) pros (wealthy) family. His father wanted him to become a lawyer like himself, but my grandfather was quite (2) rebel (disrespectful of authority). When he was 17, he met a (3) glam (exciting and interesting), much older woman – my grandmother – and ran away from home with her to become an actor. I am not surprised that my grandfather fell for my grandmother, by the way – I’ve seen photos of her as a young woman, and she was drop-dead (4) gor (very beautiful). Grandpa never became a (5) fa (well-known) actor, but he loved his job and was happy most of the time – except after a (6) disas (very unsuccessful) performance. When he did not connect with an audience, he felt that he had failed and was (7) fur (very angry) with himself. As a child, I thought my grandparents were (8) fab (wonderful). I was (9) con (aware) of the fact that they were not like other people – for example, my grandmother would wear the most (10) outra (shocking) outfits, even if she just went to get a pint of milk from the supermarket – but I enjoyed myself (11) enor (very much – adverb!) when I was with them. Looking back now, I cannot help but admire my grandfather for how (12) cour (extremely brave) he was when he decided to follow his dreams when he was only 17 and left home to live an (13) adven (exciting and possibly dangerous) life. He passed away last year at the age of 98, and I still miss him every day. LANGUAGE 1 Key Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
