Some people now wonder if robots might even (0) doctors in the future, and it is not surprising that they are asking themselves this question. After all, algorithms now beat radiologists at reading certain types of X-rays, and robots can work in places that a human surgeon could not (1) . Could they also be better than human doctors at curing cancer? The oncologist Ranjana Srivastava doesn’t think (2) . She is grateful for the progress of medicine and admits that a lot of the advice which she (3) patients as a young doctor twenty years ago would now be outdated. However, she is sceptical of some elements of modern cancer treatment. For example, she (4) overdiagnosis a serious problem: sometimes robots detect tiny tumours that would never cause any problems during the patient’s lifetime. When a person is diagnosed with cancer, they are terrified, and, (5) this psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis, unnecessary surgery may also lead to health problems. Another invention Dr Srivastava is worried about is wearable technology, such as wrist watches that monitor our sleep and blood pressure. In this case, her biggest (6) is data protection. “Exactly who will have access to the health data on our device?” she asks. Dr Srivastava understands that wearable technology, robot-assisted surgery and diagnoses based on artificial intelligence are here to stay. In her opinion, they are likely to improve our lives, but only in combination with human experience. Technology now supports (7) decisionmaking, but she believes that nothing can replace human care and compassion. “We don’t remember machines, but no one forgets the experience of someone (8) a hand, explaining things and listening,” she says. This is why she is not worried that she will be replaced by a robot anytime soon. 0 A replace B remove C predict D improve 1 A achieve B reach C operate D treat 2 A it B like that C at all D so 3 A has given B gave C giving D given 4 A believes B estimates C thinks D considers 5 A in addition to B regarding C therefore D moreover 6 A risk B concern C challenge D decision 7 A doctors’ B doctor’s C doctors D doctor 8 A that’s taking B holding C who is held D who’s taken Unit 10 Bigger, better, faster, stronger Key Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
