37 B1 | 5. Klasse | Unit 08: Rules – make or break? Working on an informal email Ivan recently visited the Botanic Gardens with his dog, Fifi. There are a lot of rules for visitors in the Botanic Gardens (see picture B on page 34), and unfortunately, Ivan and Fifi broke quite a lot of them. Avoiding repetition: In the email about his adventure in the Botanic Gardens which Ivan writes to his friend Keith, he uses five different ways to say what you cannot do in the Botanic Gardens. They can be found in the box below. Use them to complete the email. Sometimes more than one expression is correct, but you shouldn’t use any of the expressions twice. WRITING 5 forbidden not allowed not permitted not supposed prohibited Hi Keith, How are you doing? Have you had any exciting adventures lately? I went to the Botanic Gardens yesterday. Big mistake! Honestly, you’re (1) to do anything there. Because I had to walk Fifi anyway and I thought she would enjoy a huge park, I cycled to the Botanic Gardens with her. First we went to the big lawn. I threw a ball for Fifi, and she raced around, barking happily. But then a lady spotted us and said ball games are (2) in the park. When I told her that I was only walking my dog, she said that dogs are not allowed either. Then I told her Fifi was an assistance dog, but I don’t think she believed me. So I put Fifi on a leash and cycled along the path with her running along beside me. I thought I had found a permitted activity for us. However, when an old man saw us, he told me that you are (3) to cycle in the park! Because of that, we had to go back to the entrance and leave my bike there. Next, Fifi and I went for a run, but guess what? An old lady told me that running is strictly (4) in the park. At that point, I decided to leave, but I quickly picked a few flowers for my mum on the way to the exit. You can probably guess what happened next: a warden told me off and threw me out of the park. Apparently, picking flowers is (5) ! What a dull place! In the end, Fifi and I went home from the Botanic Gardens feeling sorry for ourselves. Stay away from there, that’s my advice.
