75 The English-speaking world/ Intercultural issues | In listening tasks where you have to complete sentences, you need to listen carefully to what the speaker is saying about the topic in order to recognise paraphrases. The paraphrases may include words that you don’t know, so you will need to infer their meaning by, for example, identifying which part of speech they are or looking for root words. Inferring meaning, working with vocabulary Imagine that you are going to listen to a talk about how Hollywood got its name. First look at sentences 1 to 3 below and try to work out what the words in bold mean by answering questions a to e. 1 Nobody can say with certainty how Hollywood got its name. 2 Various theories have been put forward about where the US film industry name came from. 3 Predictably, one of the most popular theories surrounding the origin of the name concerns trees. a What part of speech is the word? Is it a noun, verb, adjective, adverb? b Do the words before/after give you any clues? c Is there another word that you already know within this word – a root word? d Is there a synonym for the word that you can put in the sentence? Does it make sense? e Are there any expressions in each sentence you can ignore when working out the meaning? Now listen to the beginning of a talk about the origins of the Hollywood name.
