41 Understanding the main idea and supporting details In some listening tasks, you have to listen for the main idea and supporting details. The main idea of what the speaker is saying is like a summary of what she/he means, and a supporting detail could be an example which supports this idea. You need to listen very carefully to understand the overall meaning of what the speaker is saying. This is what can make the difference between you choosing the right answer and choosing the wrong answer.
