Top tips School on the road By Demani Taylor My parents have never been into staycations, so I’ve been travelling to exotic locations for as long as I can remember. And when I’d just turned 13, we travelled round the world. We visited 29 countries that year alone. Every day I learned something new. Before we hit the road, I was quite timid. I always stayed in the background instead of joining in. During the trip, I realised that if I wasn’t a bit more spontaneous and didn’t go up and talk to teenagers around me, I wouldn’t make any friends. With time I was telling my family what I wanted to see and do, instead of just going along with what my brother wanted or what my parents wanted. On our trip I tried a whole bunch of things, from climbing to the summit of mountains in Switzerland to hiking in the countryside in Costa Rica to camel riding near the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. That was the first time I’d tried that particular means of transport! When you travel to certain places and start to learn about the different cultures, you are kind of forced to eat their way as well. Don’t get me wrong, I ate a lot of pizza in a lot of different countries, but I learned to cook Pad Thai in Thailand as well. I ate curries in India and tried dumplings in China. It taught me that food is great in different countries. Now, I’ve eaten all kinds of different things from duck confit in France to unique flavours of Oreo cookies in Asia. On our round-the-world trip, I missed a whole year of regular school education. Instead, I learned in a different way – a much better way as it turned out. But shh, don’t tell my school! For example, I learned about King Tut’s tomb, The Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, but instead of reading about them in some book and wondering what they were like, I was actually there to learn about them. I got to touch the pyramids and ‘kiss’ a sphinx in Egypt while learning about their roots in Persian, Egyptian and Greek mythology! Isn’t that awesome!? During our trips, we used an educational website to learn more about the places we were visiting. We first read about the tunnels in Vietnam on the site and then checked them out for ourselves. Only a few of us made it the whole way, and I was one of them! Also, when we were travelling, I saw a lot of families that really had to depend on each other to survive. That really motivated my brother and me to help out more. Now we take on more duties at home, like doing dishes or our own laundry, making our own Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
