English is a world language. Of the seven billion people who live in the world, around a quarter speak (or can understand and use) English every day. In a few years, experts say that half of all the people in the world will know English. There are three sorts of people who speak English: native speakers (who speak English as their first language); people who speak English as a second or “official” language; and then millions more like YOU who see and use English every day at school, in their jobs, on the internet and in lots of other places. Because English is THE world language it is used in many different ways. It is used at airports, for political meetings, for business meetings an so on. And, of course, English has become the language of social media.
