I’m 16 years old and I’m doing an apprenticeship as a fitness instructor in a small fitness club. Of course, I’m very interested in sports and it’s important for me to keep fit, so I play volleyball twice a week and I’m in the local judo club. I love being a fitness instructor because the work is never boring. I meet a lot of interesting people every day. Some want to get rid of back pains or prepare for a marathon, others want to have strong arms or a six-pack. But most people want to lose weight. At the beginning I always do a fitness check. I ask for the age, for illnesses, injuries or eating habits and check the customer’s mobility and strength. With all the information I can create the perfect training programme. Then I explain how to work with the exercise machines, help with the exercises and give tips about a healthy lifestyle. I have to do some office work as well. That’s not my favourite part of the job, but it is necessary. The work is very varied and exciting, but there are also disadvantages: I have to work in the evenings, at weekends and in the holidays. And it’s sometimes really difficult to keep an eye on a lot of people at the same time. One day a week, I go to vocational school where I learn about anatomy, nutrition, exercise machines and first aid. After my apprenticeship I want to set up my own business, I want to open a small aerobic club for women only.
