What do you think they show? Read the descriptions of maps B and C. Reading 1 a B A C b In 2018 world population estimates reached 7.6 billion. The distribution of the earth’s population in 2018 is shown in this map. The size of each country shows the proportion of the world’s population living there. For example, Canada is slightly bigger than the USA. But as the map shows, the USA has a much larger population. India, China and Japan appear large on the map because they have large populations. Panama, Namibia and Guinea-Bissau have small populations so are barely visible on the map. The map also shows that the countries of South and East Asia have by far the largest populations relative to their size. B This map shows the global distribution of wealth in 2018. The data used for the map was taken from The Forbes World’s Billionaires list using stock prices and assets like private companies, real estate, art, yachts and more. The region with the lowest wealth was Africa; the total wealth of Africa’s richest only amounted to about 2.4% of those in North America, where billionaires were valued at $3.1 trillion. In 2020 the situation changed a little, as the richest people on earth are not immune to the coronavirus either. In March 2020, 2,095 billionaires were counted, which is 58 fewer than a year before. However, for some of the richest people in the world, the coronavirus pandemic has brought a vast increase to their wealth. In raw terms, the world’s billionaires were worth $8 trillion.
