From: Leon Hamid Subject: Globalisation and Corporate Social Responsibility Introduction The following report outlines the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in today’s global world. It focuses on areas that should be included and discusses how they might help to put an end to exploitation. Findings Climate change has shown that businesses have to adopt a responsible attitude. CSR puts a business in a wider context by considering social and environmental performance issues in addition to economic targets. Focusing on employee needs and sustainability and not just on making profits ensures a management concept that enables businesses to re-establish a healthy balance between growth and social responsibility. CSR programmes are particularly important for global players as the number of people affected by their activities is huge. Take smartphones: their production uses up resources, and components are transported over long distances causing pollution. What is more, consumers want cheap products, which forces workers to do their jobs at low wages and in horrible conditions. Companies focusing on financial gain not only tend to ignore worker’s rights but also the environmental harm their products cause. This is where CSR should come into play. Global businesses can network easily and have sufficient funds to implement human rights and environmental protection in their practices. If they lead by example, the effects will be felt globally, setting a higher standard also for smaller enterprises. In this way CSR would work against exploitative practices and contribute to a fairer world. Conclusion Businesses are embedded in social and environmental systems, which they can influence positively if they implement CSR programmes. Global companies have to consider their impact and do everything in their power to provide a healthy work atmosphere and protect nature.
