From: Samira Hadletz Subject: Survey on the quality of life in European cities Introduction The following report outlines the results of the European Commission’s 2019/20 survey on the quality of life in European cities. Findings The number of people living in cities is rising, partly due to population growth, but also because cities are attractive to all ages providing access to employment opportunities, public transport, and countless free time activities. This trend was reflected in the survey where 58,100 people were interviewed in 83 European cities ranging from under 250,000 to more than 5 million inhabitants. Overall, people are less satisfied in southern Europe. In central and northern Europe, including the UK, 92–94.5% of the population are happy with life in their city. The least satisfied group were immigrants. Only 75% stated that they were happy compared to 82% of young families. The satisfaction values of gay and lesbian communities and of elderly people are in between with 75% and 80%. Correspondingly, cities also face social and environmental problems. The air quality in European cities was an additional aspect covered in the survey, again with the lowest result for southern Europe where only 46% were happy with the air quality. Apart from that, air quality appears better in non-capital cities (66% of inhabitants satisfied) than in capital cities (57% satisfied). Conclusion and recommendations As the survey results show, satisfaction with life in cities in Europe is relatively high. Yet, city administrations could improve life in cities by making them more inclusive. Initiatives to integrate immigrants and improve neighbourhoods are crucial. Inclusive projects such as communal gardening could bring people from different backgrounds and generations together. In addition, environmental protection measures targeting air quality should be taken.
