Activities Unit 9, exercise 17 This graph shows the rate at which British people adopted new technology over a 15-year period from 2000 to 2015. The x-axis represents the time line starting with 2000, and the y-axis lists the percentages of the population. The six categories depicted as line graphs are use of the internet and social media, ownership of a smartphone, tablet or smartwatch and availability of broadband at home. Overall, there was widespread adoption of new technology during these years. Nearly nine out of ten people in the UK were online by 2015. In the same year, approximately 70 to 80 percent had broadband in their home, owned a smartphone and used social media platforms. Nearly half the population also owned a tablet in 2015. The only exception to this is smart-watch ownership, which remained comparatively low at 5 percent. As far as the uptake of new technology over the relevant time is concerned, the figures show a dramatic increase. For instance, internet usage tripled and social media usage jumped by 78 percentage points. Smartphones and tablets entered the market in 2010 and immediately caught on, which can be seen in an almost vertical upward movement of the lines. Nevertheless, for some products the graph shows that initial growth slowed down considerably after the initial surge. Broadband subscription, for example, rose steadily by 30 percentage points every five years to 2010, but by a modest 4 percentage points thereafter. Quite differently, the newer technologies such as tablets showed no sign of levelling off. To sum up, ownership of all the technologies was increasing in the period under review. The developments suggest that the upwards trend will continue. It will be interesting to see when individual technologies peak and are replaced by innovations. 2000 2005 Year Percentage of population 2010 2015 use the internet use social media own a smartphone have broadband at home own a tablet own a smartwatch 0 100 90 90 75 80 80 73 69 65 57 52 45 35 30 19 5 5 6 1 2 70 60 50 40 30 20 10 203 Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
