Sample task In your community, there are regular book swapping events, flea markets and second-hand bookshops. When you see Angela’s blog post, you decide to answer it. In your blog comment you should: ■■ refer to Angela’s post ■■ discuss if paper books are necessary for our culture ■■ argue why you think these books will or won’t die Write around 250 words. Angela_Wilson Paper books – a thing of the past? E-books seem to be replacing paper books. Even my otherwise conservative parents are considering getting rid of their book collection because it takes up too much space. I’m not sure whether I like the idea. OK, on e-book readers you always have all your books with you. But somehow it makes me sad to think of old books disappearing or being recycled. I’m afraid that by 2050, books will have been replaced by electronic devices. Aren’t you worried about this too? Reply Sample blog comment JulesO julius_oberheller@mymail.com Angela, thank you for bringing this up. I understand your concerns, but I don’t think the future of print books looks that bleak. Paper books existed long before computers and digital devices. I’ve always enjoyed reading them and infinitely prefer them to e-books: I like holding them in my hands, smelling and touching them. I’m convinced that many others feel the same way. In my opinion, printed books are simply part of our cultural traditions – just think of their social function for example. I was wondering if you have ever been to a flea market or a book swapping party. In my community they have become really popular. People of all ages get together, actually hold the books in their hands and talk about the stories. It’s amazing how printed paper brings people together! Also, you can’t really get a famous author to sign a copy of their book for you electronically, can you? I also like that a well-thumbed traditional book shows how many times it’s been read – it simply has a history! Yes, certainly, as you say in your post, with an e-reader you can take a whole library on holiday with you. But are you really going to read all those books? I sincerely doubt it. And what is more: paper books don’t crash or break, and you don’t need electricity or batteries to use them. So announcing the death of print books might be a bit premature. Many more good reads for all of us!
