Would you like to support a good cause? Think of a charity or an environmental organisation (real or made up), and write your own fundraising flyer. Use the above flyer as a model and add pictures and graphs to make it more attractive. Display your flyers in class. b Talk about each of Mandy’s points. Which do you think is: ■■ a good idea? ■■ a good idea but difficult to do? ■■ a good idea, but a lot of people do it already? ■■ a waste of time? Example: I think it’s a good idea not to keep machines on standby, but I often forget to turn them off. Mandy says, ‘If we all lived a greener life, our world would soon be cleaner and greener too.’ Think about more things people could do to reduce their carbon footprint: ■■ at home heating, air conditioning, waste … ■■ travelling long-distance, fuel, public or private transport … ■■ shopping local products, packaging, second-hand … ■■ free-time activities cycling, walking … ■■ at school recycling, waste, bottled drinks … Talk in groups. What do you think about each other’s ideas? Why? Example: If everyone turned down their heating or air conditioning, we’d use less energy. Media task. Go online and find a carbon footprint calculator. Type in your details and sum up the result. What are your worst areas? Look at Mandy’s tips on p. 85 again and decide which tips would be most useful for you. Then compare your results with your partner. Could you be “greener” in the same areas? You won’t believe how easy it is to avoid waste and raise money for a good cause at the same time. All you need to do is help us collect plastic bottle tops so we can sell them to the company Plastic Solutions, and they will pay 400 Australian dollars for every ton collected. The company recycles the bottle tops and turns them into granules for the production of plastic bags and plastic bottles. The money raised from this initiative is going to children in need. These are children who need expensive medical treatment or children who have lost their homes through natural catastrophes. We will install collection points on every oor of the school building. These will be clearly marked with a sign saying ‘Bottle Top Drive’. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed about the progress of our initiative. If you have any questions about the project contact Mandy in Room 324 or go to www.bottletopdrive.com 86 Language skills Extras Explore 7 Your environment Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
