4 If you wanted to help, you your rubbish (recycle). 5 Unless taxes are raised, companies their emissions (not reduce). 6 If we had started to reduce CO2 emissions in the 1980s, the situation so critical (not become). Situation You are working as an intern at a company in Cambridge which is looking to move to new premises. The manager has called a meeting to discuss the two options; buy and renovate an existing old building or build a brand new eco-friendly one. Individual Long Turn (around 3 minutes) You have been asked to give a short talk at the meeting. You read a blog post on the company intranet that you find very interesting, and you’ve also found useful information on a German website. You should: ■■ comment on the blog post (attachment 1) ■■ explain how renovating an old building might actually be better for the environment (attachment 2) ■■ discuss which option you think would be better for the company Interaction (5–8 minutes) After your presentation the manager asks you and a colleague to prepare a report on the advantages of a green building. Discuss and argue which 3–4 of the following aspects you would include in the report: ■■ financial savings ■■ public image ■■ saving the environment ■■ setting a good example ■■ being technologically advanced ■■ maintenance and repair Speaking 6 Speaking i i I can give a presentation about environmentally-friendly buildings. I can compare different situations and ideas. Attachment 1 JULIA_Z Go Green! Building a new green building would save us money in the long term, in three main ways. First, using green materials saves heating, cooling, electricity and water costs. Second, the government will give us tax breaks if we build in a sustainable way. Finally, renewable materials require less maintenance and are easier to repair. A custom-designed building will meet our needs long into the future, save us money and improve our public image. This is an easy decision – new building please!
