Info point: Shapes and drawings Shapes A line has only one dimension – the length. It has a beginning and an end. It is the only 1-D shape. A 2-D shape has length and width, but no depth. It can have edges and corners, but only in one plane. A 3-D shape has length, width and depth. Most of them have faces, edges and corners. All 3-D shapes are solids. Study the table below. Work in A/B pairs. Cover the text in the table with a sheet of paper so that you can only see the pictures. A, point at a picture, B, identify and describe the shape. Then change roles. Example: This is a football field. It has the shape of a rectangle. / It is rectangular / of rectangular shape . Two-dimensional shapes Three-dimensional objects A square has four equal sides. The three overlapping shapes in this picture are square. A cube has a surface of six equal squares. They are called ‘faces’. A dice is a cubic object often used in board games. A rectangle also has four sides. The opposite sides of a rectangular field have the same lengths. A cylinder can be solid or hollow. A drum is a quite loud cylindrical object. A parallelogram is closely related to a rectangle, but its sides are shifted either to the right or to the left. So it has no right angles. A prism can be built on a triangular or a rectangular base. The triangle is one of the basic geometric shapes. The chequered flag is triangular. A cone is a curved 3-D object with a circular base that narrows toward a point. An icecream cone is a sweet conical object. A regular pentagon has five sides. There is a pentagonal building in Washington, DC. What is it? A pyramid has a square base. The main entrance to the Louvre is pyramidal. This illustration shows circles in a circle. Looking at it can make you dizzy. A ring is circular. You can draw a circle with a drawing compass. A sphere is often also called ball or globe. Marbles are spherical objects made of glass or stone. A spiral is a fascinating geometric shape. London City Hall has a spiral staircase. The earth has two hemispheres: the northern and the southern hemisphere. 17 a b 56 Language skills Extras Explore 4 Changes Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
