Sample Matura task: Food & health Mündliche Reife- und Diplomprüfung aus ENGLISCH Thema 4 Food & health Prüfungsfrage 4.01 Prüfungsdatum: Situation: You are an intern at the Food Literacy Center, an American NGO based in Sacramento, California. This organisation teaches “weekly programs afterschool in low-income elementary schools throughout the Sacramento area. In our classrooms, students learn fruit and vegetable appreciation, how to read nutrition labels, cooking skills and environmental impacts of their food choices – and they have fun.” At a meeting of the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), which is responsible for all public schools in this area, you are invited to present the Food Literacy Center and its activities. Your bosses hope that the SCOE will make your program mandatory for all public elementary schools. Individual Long Turn (4–5 minutes): Give a presentation to the members of the SCOE in which you ■■ outline the relevance of a healthy diet for everyone, especially for students ■■ give examples of particularly alarming developments (see attachments) ■■ recommend a possible course of action. Interaction (8–10 minutes): After your presentation, a member of the SCOE approaches you to discuss possible approaches and strategies to improve the schoolchildren’s overall health and well-being. In your dialogue with this representative, you should ■■ compare the importance of exercise with the importance of a healthy diet ■■ analyse the reasons why the situation today is considerably worse than it was some decades ago ■■ explain how the approach of the Food Literacy Center can also contribute to tackling environmental problems, such as climate change (see attachments). Attachment 1 Why food literacy matters Only 25% of kids eat enough fruits and veggies. 40% of Sacramento kids struggle with obesity. 58% of Sacramento kids use free/reduced lunch programs. Attachment 2 There are many ways that you can choose to eat and live more sustainably: 1. Reduce the amount of meat, fish and dairy you eat. Animal agriculture is an industry with one of the largest carbon footprints. You don’t have to go full-on vegan, just reduce the amount of meat and dairy you eat and up the veggies! 2. Eating less meat and dairy means that you could spend a little extra on sustainably reared produce. 3. Choose to eat foods that are in season. Seasonal foods haven’t had to be artificially ripened and are less likely to have come from overseas. 4. Likewise, foods that have been produced locally have fewer air miles. 5. R educe your food waste, because why would you want to waste all that consciously produced food?! 6. Choose products that have been traded fairly. 7. Grow your own herbs, fruit and vegetables. That way, you’ll know exactly what’s gone into producing them! 4.15 43 Key aspects Strategies Sample task 4 Food & health Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
