Read the email and answer the questions. 1 Who is it for? Who wrote it? What is its purpose? 2 What changes does the parent-teacher association (PTA) want to make? How do the students feel about them? 3 What changes would the students like? Which are the most important? b From: Constanza Brookes, student representative To: Diane Wellington, headteacher Subject: A Dear Ms Wellington, (1) We have been informed that money was recently allocated for improvements to the café, and that the PTA has made some suggestions about how to spend it. (2) The purpose of this proposal is to summarise the reaction of the students to these ideas and (3) to present some suggestions of our own. B (4) As we understand it, the PTA has three main suggestions: ■ ■ to repaint the walls and hang curtains ■ ■ to buy longer tables and more chairs ■ ■ to brighten up the café with plants We are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. (5) This would certainly make the café more attractive. (6) We also propose that the school buy several poster-size prints to brighten up the walls even more. However, (7) we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants, we feel the money could be better spent on other things. C (8) We believe that the money should be spent in four areas. (9) Our proposals are: ■ ■ to invest in a new dishwashing machine. According to the café staff, the present machine is of poor quality and doesn’t always clean the dishes and cutlery thoroughly. ■ ■ to purchase a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down constantly and takes a long time to get repaired. Also, (10) would it be possible to change to fair-trade products? ■ ■ to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table. ■ ■ to buy new uniforms for the café staff in the school colours as this would strengthen the school’s corporate identity. (11) We hope that our proposals will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines. (12) We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient time.
