The data used for the map was taken from the World Health Organization. Within nine months after the first cases had been reported from Wuhan, China, more than 26 million people contracted Covid-19. The number of deaths was slightly higher than 865,000. The United States of America recorded most of the fatalities in that period with 183.610 followed by Brazil, where 122,596 people died from the coronavirus. The situation in the United Kingdom and Italy was much worse than in other European countries with these two countries reporting 41,514 and 35,497 fatalities by September 2020. C Between 2001 and 2017 the number of people killed in epidemics was much larger in Africa than in Asia. The proportion of fatalities due to epidemic outbreaks is shown in this map by the size of each country. With almost 7,000 reported deaths, the Cholera epidemic in Haiti in 2010/11 killed by far the highest number of people in a single outbreak, followed by the Ebola outbreak in Liberia in 2014. International action to drive down cholera led to a 60 percent decrease in cases in 2018. Most of the reported epidemics happened in countries in sub- Saharan Africa. The number of cases is slightly higher in the Democratic Republic of Congo than in Nigeria, Niger and Uganda. A vast increase in international aid is needed to fight epidemics in these countries.
