Since then she has been tireless in her fight for girls’ right to an education, defying the extremist group. In 2013, Malala delivered a now famous address at the UN headquarters in New York, in which she described the Taliban’s opposition to education as their fear of “books and pens”. Although new threats against her life emerged as soon as it became known that she had won the prestigious prize, the education activist refused to be silenced. She studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford, where she graduated in 2020. During her studies, she continued her fight to ensure all girls receive 12 years of free, safe, good quality education. With the Malala Fund, she invests in local educators and advocates in developing countries, and supports girls in underprivileged areas all over the world. (2) In 2013, three female activists protested against the acquittal of a neighbourhood watchman, who had shot dead an African-American teenager in February 2012. Their hashtag #BlackLivesMatter quickly became widely used on social media. The movement became recognised in the U.S. for non-violent civil disobedience such as street demonstrations against incidents of police brutality. Through protests and demonstrations in Ferguson, Missouri, the movement spread further, finally gaining international attention during the George Floyd protests in 2020, which followed his killing by a police officer. Since then, the protesters have moved from standing up against racially motivated violence to specific demands to reform the police and invest directly in black communities. The movement works as a loose network of different groups all following the same guiding principles. (3) Extinction Rebellion (XR) is a global environmental movement that aims at forcing governments into action to avoid tipping points in the climate system that would lead to biodiversity loss and social and ecological collapse. Its loosely networked, decentralised structure harks back to Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and other civil rights movements. The movement originated in 2018, with about one hundred academics signing a call to action. In November 2018, five bridges across the River Thames in London were blockaded, and this was followed by the occupation of five prominent sites in central London, such as Piccadilly Circus. Extinction Rebellion wants to rally support worldwide to tackle climate breakdown. Using nonviolent civil disobedience, they aim to make governments declare a climate and ecological emergency and get greenhouse gas emissions down to net zero in the 2020s. Another demand is creating a citizens’ assembly on climate and ecological justice, which advises the government. A number of activists in the movement even accept arrest and imprisonment. The movement uses a stylised, circled hourglass, known as the extinction symbol, serving as a warning that time is rapidly running out for many species.
