Read the fundraising flyer below. Who is it addressed to? What is its purpose? a Writing 19 Help us help the environment and children in need It’s Earth Day today, and to celebrate this special day our school is starting an initiative to protect the environment and help children in need. You won’t believe how easy it is to avoid waste and raise money for a good cause at the same time. All you need to do is help us collect plastic bottle tops so we can sell them to the company Plastic Solutions, and they will pay 400 Australian dollars for every ton collected. The company recycles the bottle tops and turns them into granules for the production of plastic bags and plastic bottles. The money raised from this initiative is going to children in need. These are children who need expensive medical treatment or children who have lost their homes through natural catastrophes. We will install collection points on every oor of the school building. These will be clearly marked with a sign saying ‘Bottle Top Drive’. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed about the progress of our initiative. If you have any questions about the project contact Mandy in Room 324 or go to www.bottletopdrive.com Would you like to support a good cause? Think of a charity or an environmental organisation (real or made up), and write your own fundraising flyer. Use the above flyers as a model and add pictures and graphs to make it more attractive. Display your flyers in class. b Having a debate Ask and answer the questions. 1 Are there any airports near your hometown? 2 Are there any plans to make them bigger or to build new ones? 3 What do you think are the advantages of living near an airport? What are the disadvantages? Read the information. Match the photos 1–3 on the next page with the places A–C on the map. Reading 20 a b It’s clear that this area of the country needs a bigger airport. The present airport, very near Sandstown, is extremely important for business and for local tourism, but everyone agrees that it’s too small. It gets thousands of passengers every day, both from other cities in the country and from abroad, and this number will probably increase by at least fifty per cent in the next five years. Some people think the best solution to this problem would be to make the airport bigger by adding a new terminal. Others believe that Sandstown Airport should be closed, and a new airport built further away from the town. There are two possible locations for a new airport: near the village of Sibley on the coast, or on the road going through the Nature Reserve.
