Write your answers in the boxes provided. The first one (0) has been done for you. Le Bon Marché is of historical importance because it is the world’s first department store. It changed shopping. Unlike earlier stores, Le Bon Marché (0) in a large, beautiful building. Eye-catching counters1 were everywhere and encouraged people to walk the full length of each floor. So, the store felt more like a shopping street than an interior space. More radical than its architecture (1) . Le Bon Marché was one of the first places to feature mass- produced and ready-to-wear clothing, which made fashion and luxury more affordable2 for the middle classes. The store also (2) , and marked them visibly on price tags3, so shoppers could concentrate on enjoying themselves. Aristide Boucicaut, the founder, was a shop owner’s son who quickly (3) for an establishment that offered buyers more choice. In 1852 he and his wife Marguerite (4) into a new Parisian “grand magasin” or department store. It offered a wide selection of goods where shoppers could walk around and enjoy themselves. Le Bon Marché was born and home delivery, exchanging articles, mail order and seasonal sales were possible. Furthermore, private concerts, a reading room for waiting husbands and an interior cafeteria were established. In early 1875 they opened an art gallery that they (5) to exhibit4 their work. The LVMH Group (6) in 1984 and the new team around Bernard Arnault decided to rebrand it with a refurbishment5 that would make it the most exclusive shop in Paris.
