Her first story was called Rabbit, (0) . As a child, Rowling’s favourite subject was English. After school she went to Exeter University, in the south of England, (1) . This is why, after graduating, Rowling moved to Paris for a year. Back in London, she did a number of jobs, like working for Amnesty International. One day on a train ride from Manchester to London, she suddenly had the idea of writing a book about a boy (2) . But it took seven years before the first volume of Harry Potter was published. During this time her mother died, and JK Rowling left England to teach English in Portugal. She married a Portuguese television journalist but left him a year later and decided to live in Edinburgh, with Jessica, her daughter. Life in Edinburgh was hard. There were mice in her flat, and she couldn’t afford to pay for the heating. It is said that various British publishers turned down the manuscript, but Bloomsbury Children’s Books finally (5) . In 1997 Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published and was an immediate success. The funny thing is that the book was only published under Rowling’s initials to hide the fact that she was a woman. Bloomsbury Children’s Books were afraid that (6) a book written by a female author. The second and third volumes of the series followed in 1999, and by the time Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came out, JK Rowling was an international star and the highest earning woman in Britain – with an income higher than the Queen.
