My life has been very interesting; I have seen many countries and met lots of people. I have always been active and interested in different cultures. In the last few years I have spent most of the time here in my small house and garden in the suburbs of Washington DC. Travelling for me started when I joined the army in 1953. I thought I would fight in the Korean war but when I joined up it had already finished. I moved to Berlin as soon as I had completed my basic training, so Europe, and not Asia, was the first continent for me to discover. Well, I’ve been to so many countries since then that I can hardly remember them all. I’ve been to Poland, Russia, Latvia and Romania, but have also travelled to Spain, Italy, Switzerland and France more than three times. Actually, I have explored all of the countries around the Mediterranean Sea, except Morocco. I had the chance to go there in 1987, but then there was a bad storm and the cruiser I was on had to stop in Tunis. It wasn’t the first time the weather had spoiled my travel plans but it was pretty annoying. It was towards the end of my holiday, so I could not wait for better weather and had to return to the States. I’ve never been to Australia or to the Scandinavian countries, but I would love to go there. Maybe I will manage to book a trip to Stockholm next Christmas. As I have travelled a lot, I’ve seen a lot of wonderful places and have eaten and drunk some strange things. I had light blue Ryuhyo Beer in Japan and ate grilled grasshoppers in Indonesia – I hadn’t eaten insects before and they tasted really funny. I have always wanted to brew my own beer, but I haven’t managed to do so yet. I once worked in a bar for a week in Paris – before that I had always wanted to own a pub, but it was such hard work I changed my mind. Yeah, I know, I’ve been around for a few years that doesn’t mean I have stopped planning. It doesn’t matter how old you are, it matters how active you stay in your mind. 130 11 Unit Experiences Goals talk about experiences say what you’ve never done and always wanted to do talk about places you’ve been to find out information about things start and finish conversations Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
