5 The United Nations at work The SecretaryGeneral of the UN is the chief administrative officer and its most visible public figure. The diplomat is elected to a fiveyear term. Shortly after his appointment to the UN’s highest position Ban gave a speech in London in which he outlined general aspects of the UN and his office.
