But is it really important? Yes! …  0   There are some effects of healthy eating that you will notice pretty quickly. For example, a healthy diet can: •• help you control your body weight, so that you are neither underweight nor overweight. •• give you more energy to enjoy all kinds of physical activity, like playing football or basketball, swimming or running. •• support your body while you are growing and developing so that you reach your full physical potential. •• …  1  •• avoid diet-related diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes or osteoporosis. Modern life is fast. There is a lot to do and not much time. …  2   Because fat, salt and sugar make food taste good, fast food tends to have high levels of all of these, to make people buy more. Fast food is often also called “junk food” because it often contains ingredients of little nutritional value and is more likely to lead to health problems. Diets high in fat have been linked to increased risks of coronary disease, like heart attacks. Part of the reason is that fatty deposits can develop inside blood vessels, so that not enough blood can get through to your heart, your brain or other important organs. …  3   Heart attacks, however, usually don’t happen until people get older. Salt plays a very important and complex role in the body. But diets that are high in salt can lead to a considerable increase of your blood pressure, which in turn can affect your brain or your heart, but also your eyes. Food that contains a lot of fat and sugar is high in calories. That means that they provide the body with a lot of energy. …  4   Too much sugar, especially when you don’t brush your teeth, also contributes to tooth decay. As it turns out, living completely on fast food is not recommendable. But don’t worry, there is enough left for you. …  5   If you go shopping and make sure you have a few items from each group in your basket, you are likely to be eating healthily: •• Fruit and vegetables contain a lot of different nutrients, like vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. Two servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables every day are recommended. •• Bread, pasta, rice and other foods from grains provide you with carbohydrates, which are important sources of energy. •• Dairy products, like milk, cheese or yoghurt all contain calcium, which is important for the development and health of bones, teeth and nerves. •• Chicken, red meat, fish and seafood all give you protein. Be sure that fat and skin is trimmed off, and that the food is cooked using a low-fat method, such as grilling or steaming. …  6  •• Avoid sweets in general, especially those with lots of fats. •• Everyone forgets about water but it is important and the best drink for you. Try to drink several glasses a day. Fruit juice is fine too, but try not to drink too many soft drinks.
