W Writing guide WG 1: A review   Page 43 Form and content The form of reviews can vary widely. Reviews found in different sources range from very informal to well-written ones produced by professional critics in quality newspapers and specialised magazines. The basic structure, however, stays the same: title – introduction – body – conclusion Since reviews are a relatively free type of text, writers often do not stick to fixed rules. The form of a review depends on its purpose and target group. A comment on a film on the internet, for example, does not require a special form. Everybody can present their opinion there. Writing a review Useful tips Introduction Choose an appropriate title for your review. Paragraphs Give the main information about what’s being reviewed. You can also start with a question to arouse the reader’s interest (e. g. “What happens when a snobbish multi-millionaire and an unemployed under-class girl fall in love?”). Structure your text into paragraphs. If you start a new point, you also need to start a new paragraph. Opinion Give your opinion. Do not only summarise a film, text, etc. but also state your point of view clearly. If you did not like what’s being reviewed, give your reasons. Conclusion Conclude the text by giving suggestions or recommendations. Sample review a) Read this prompt for a review and answer the questions below. • Who is the target group of the review? • What is the appropriate style? • What information must be included? You recently saw this notice in an English-language magazine called Teen Film World . REVIEWS NEEDED! Have you recently watched a film about a current topic (e. g. immi- gration) and the set of problems surrounding it? If so, send us your film review! The best reviews will be published next month. b) Put the jumbled parts of the sample review on the next page into the correct order. c) Identify the following parts: title – introduction – body – conclusion. d) Underline useful words and phrases that you could use for writing your own review. 1  2  170 Writing guide Nur zu Prüfzwecken – Eigentum des Verlags öbv
