The system brutally oppressed the black majority. South Africa is a nation of 53 million people. They have diverse origins, cultures, languages and beliefs, which is why South Africa is often referred to as the Rainbow Nation. There are eleven officially recognised languages, nine of which are African. About 40% of the population speak either isiZulu or isiXhosa. Although English is spoken at home by only about 10% of the population, it is the most commonly spoken language in commercial and official situations.
