The country has lots of natural resources, many of which are exported. The financial and manufacturing sectors are very strong and tourism is a very important industry. South Africa is the wealthiest and fastest growing country in Africa. The most widely played sport is soccer. The national soccer team is nicknamed Bafana Bafana, which means “The Boys”. South Africa was host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and since then soccer has become even more important. Other popular sports are “British” sports, especially rugby and also cricket. The country’s climate and countryside mean it is well-suited to endurance sports such as marathon running and cycling. Cape Town, known as the Mother City, is the oldest city in South Africa. Table Mountain is one of South Africa’s most famous landmarks. Cape Town was founded in 1652 as a stopover point on the spice route by Dutch traders. Until then the San and Khoekhoe peoples had lived there. Unlike most other countries, South Africa has three capital cities: Cape Town is the legislative capital, Pretoria the administrative and Bloem- fontein the judicial capital.
