On 20 January 2009, Barack Hussein Obama took the oath as president of the United States of America in front of possibly the largest crowd of people ever to have gathered in one place to take part in such a ceremony. According to estimates as many as two million people heard their new president deliver a sombre 20-minute speech in Washington’s National Mall in which he stated that the country was in the midst of severe crisis – entangled in wars, its economy struggling and its national con‡dence dwindling. He promised the largely silent audience that it was his ‡rm intention to meet the challenges, but he also warned that it would take some time, some sacri‡ce, a new form of politics and a re-engagement with the world. America would have to recognise that “power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please”. President Obama was sworn in just ažer midday under a crisp blue sky in front of the shining dome of the Capitol, which, it is now understood, was partly built by Afro-American slaves.
